So, how did our researchers test OS-01 HAIR, and what do their groundbreaking results mean for your hair?
OS -01 HAIR – Designed to Reduce Senescence
Research finds that cellular senescence is linked to follicle dysfunction, making it a key driver in age-related thinning, and a potential exacerbating factor in pattern hair loss and contributor to stress-related hair loss.[1,2,3,4,5,6] Having already studied the success of the OS-01 peptide in treating senescent skin cells, it was a natural next step to test the effects of OS-01 HAIR—the first scalp serum with the OS-01 peptide—on hair follicle cells.
Through in vitro testing, our researchers treated outer root sheath cells (ORSCs), which play a key role in hair growth and regeneration, with a stress hormone that induces senescence (called CRH) and OS-01 HAIR to measure the efficacy of OS-01 HAIR on reducing levels of senescence.
Unsurprisingly, CRH alone increased cellular aging significantly. But here's the exciting part—cells treated with OS-01 HAIR saw a significant drop in senescence levels.[7]
Shown in lab studies on ORSCs (hair follicle cells) by measuring the change in senescence via senescence associated-beta galactosidase staining. Cells were treated with corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) alone or in combination with OS-01 HAIR. After 72 hours, cells treated with OS-01 HAIR + CRH showed significantly lower senescence levels compared to those treated with CRH alone.
This is important because reducing levels of senescent hair follicle cells has been shown to stimulate regeneration.[8,9] Based on these early promising results from lab testing, our researchers were optimistic about seeing similar results from our clinical study.
How The Clinical Study Was Conducted
During our 6 month single-center, double-blind, randomized clinical study, 30 male and female participants aged 25-55 who reported hair thinning despite having healthy scalps applied OS-01 HAIR twice daily across the entire scalp, along with daily dermaroller use. At baseline, 3 months, and 6 months, participants were measured for hair growth with instrumental analysis HairMetrix® clinical photography, Trichoscopy, and Phototrichogram with analysis to evaluate:
- Density (hair count per cm2 & inter-follicular mean distance)
- Thickness (sum of hair width per cm2 & average hair width (thickness))
- Count of anagen (growth phase) hairs
In addition to self-perception questionnaires, these methods help us objectively measure hair loss and regrowth as well as participants' subjective experiences.
What Were the Results of OS-01 HAIR’s Clinical Study?
The results of the OS-01 HAIR clinical study are nothing short of impressive:
Density
Participants showed significant improvements in density at 3 and 6 months, with the improvement increasing over time:
- Shown in 86.67% of participants with an average improvement of +39.62% in hair count per cm2 (number of hairs) after 6 months.[10]
- Shown in 70% of participants, with an average improvement of 9.97% in interfollicular mean distance (distance between follicles) after 3 months.[10]
Thickness
OS-01 HAIR significantly improves strand thickness after 6 months:
- Shown in 83.33% of participants, with an average improvement of 42.58% in the sum of hair widths after 6 months[10]
Hair Cycle
In addition to improving existing strands' health, OS-01 HAIR was shown to increase the number of anagen (growth phase) hairs after 6 months, indicating a reactivation of the hair growth cycle:
- Shown in 73.33% of participants with an average improvement of 42.39% in number of anagen hairs per cm2 after 6 months[10]
How Did OS-01 HAIR Affect Male Hair Loss?
Although the sample size of males in the clinical study was relatively small, our data was significant, indicating that the improvements experienced were large enough to offset the statistical need for a large sample size:
- Density: Male participants saw significant improvement after 6 months with 6 out of 7 men experiencing an average increase of +34.86% in hair count per cm2 after 6 months of using OS-01 HAIR.[10]
- Thickness: In addition to improvements in hair density, participants showed significant improvement in hair thickness at 3 and 6 months, with improvement increasing over time. OS-01 HAIR was exceptionally effective, causing 100% of male participants to experience an average increase of 36.68% in hair thickness (sum of hair widths) after 6 months of using OS-01 HAIR.[10]
- Hair Cycle: 6 out of 7 male participants experienced significant improvements in the number of anagen (growth phase) hairs after 3 and 6 months of 20.19% and 35.42%, respectively.[10]
